Welcome!
My name is Mary Washburn and I am a graduate student in the Nelms Lab at UGA. I am passionate about teaching, mentoring, and communication.

About Me
I am interested in research-based approaches to teaching and learning. I strive for equity, inclusion, and making science accessible to all. My current lab research at UGA focuses on plant reproduction pollen development.
Service and involvement are near and dear to my heart, and I have been able to serve through my previous roles in the Plant Biology Graduate Student Association (UGA), Biology Honor Society (UNG), and through my service in the U.S. Navy. I am currently involved in the Garden Club at my child’s elementary school, helping students learn and appreciate all that plants do in our daily lives.
In my personal life I am an avid gardener, go adventuring in the North Georgia mountains with my family, and am always on the search for a good pinball machine.
